4X games is a sub-genre of strategy video games. In 4X games, players are given control over an empire and they have to do 4 things to achieve victory: eXplore, eXpand, eXploit, and eXterminate. The term was created by Alan Emrich during Master of Orion release in 1993, and since then, other developers and gamers have used it to describe games of similar design. 4X video games are renowned for their deep, complex gameplay. Emphasis is placed upon economic and technological development, as well as a range of non-military routes to supremacy. 4X games can take a long time to complete since the amount of micromanagement needed to sustain an empire increases as the empire grows. 4X games can be either turn-based or real-time titles. In Multiplayer, more than one person can play in the same game environment at the same time. Before the internet era, video games were mostly Single Player activities, putting the player against preset challenges and AI-controlled opponents (which lacked the flexibility and unpredictability of human mind). Multiplayer games allow players to interact with each other in partnership, rivalry or competition, giving them a level of social communication absent in Single Player titles. In Multiplayer games, players may compete against two (or more) human contestants, work cooperatively with a human partner to achieve a common goal, and even supervise other players' activity. Multiplayer games typically require players to share the resources of a single game system or use networking technology to play together over a greater distance. A video game franchise commonly associated with multiplayer is Counter-Strike. Massively Multiplayer Online games (also called MMOs) are a variation of multiplayer games in which a very large number of players can interact with one another within a virtual world. The best example of an MMO game is World of Warcraft.BioShock is a franchise consisting of three FPS video games, developed and published by 2K Games. The first installment in the series was released in August 2007 for multiple platforms. It was a huge hit and quickly spun into the other media. All games in the series (BioShock, BioShock 2, and BioShock Infinite) are set in various dystopian cities/communities and the games’ protagonist has to fight against all odds to survive. BioShock includes elements of aforementioned FPS, survival horrors, and even role-playing games, giving the player different approaches in engaging enemies and various obstacles. The BioShock games were often praised for their disturbing, morality-based storylines, immersive environments, and unique settings, and are all considered to be some of the greatest video games of all time. They are also a statement that video games can be a form of art. Dark, depressing, beautiful and scary. BioShock is all that and more!
