Mac is not the first thing that comes to mind when you hear the word “gaming”. Yes, mobile games are extremely popular on iPhone and iPad but when it comes to big, triple-A titles, Mas seems to stay behind PC and home gaming consoles. Even though Apple devices were always cutting edge, they are still not associated with video games. You might not know this, but gaming on Mac computers is nothing new. In fact, the first Mac video games are pretty old and date back to the late 1970s. These games include titles such as Global War, Asteroids in Space, and Flight Simulator. The number of Mac titles never equaled (and probably never will) the number of PC or console games, but there were blockbusters and advanced titles as well. Myst (released in 1993), Sim City 2000 (1993), Wolfenstein 3D (1994), Command and Conquer (1996), and Diablo (1997) are just a few of them. And now? Look at titles like BioShock, DragonAge, and Guitar Hero. The Mac’s video game library may not be as extensive as PC’s or PlayStation’s but it certainly isn’t as bad as one might think. The iOS system is very fluid and efficient, and because of that gaming on Mac can be pretty entertaining.
Role-playing games (known also as RPGs) are based on more traditional board games like Dungeons & Dragons. In most of these games player can take a role of one or more adventurers who specialize in a specific skill (combat, magic, stealth, etc.). Many role-playing games force players to travel through the game world, usually populated with various monsters. While doing so, players can access more important locations, such as different towns, caves, and dungeons. Gameplay elements typically associated with RPGs, are: character development (through the experience points), exploration, and gathering of loot. The most well-known RPG franchises of all time are: Baldur’s Gate, The Elder Scrolls, Final Fantasy, Witcher, and Dragon Age. Games Republic. Only top role-playing titles for PC and consoles. In Single-player mode, only one player is expected to participate in every gaming session. The term “Single-player video game” usually refers to a game that can only be played by one person. The “Single-player mode” usually refers to a particular game mode that is designed for one player, though the game also contains other modes (that can be played by several players simultaneously). The majority of modern video games are designed so that they can be played in Single-player. Although many of these games have modes that allow two or more players to have fun, very few require more than one player for the game to be played. A good example is The Unreal Tournament series. Single-player games rely heavily on compelling stories and immersive settings. The point of this is drawing players into the experience and creating a sense of investment. Humans are unpredictable and therefore players cannot be relied upon to carry a narrative in a particular direction. Because of this fact, most multiplayer games try not to focus on a linear narrative. By contrast, many Single-player games are built around a compelling story and interactions with the in-game world.
