Fighting video games belong to a very specific genre that is trying to simulate close-range combat against various opponents. The player controls an on-screen character and engages in close combat with his/her opponent, which can be either controlled by AI or by another player. While ranged and melee weapons may be present in fighting games, they strongly emphasize brutal and spectacular hand-to-hand combat. Fighting games were one of the dominant genres in the 1990s, thanks to the legendary franchises like Mortal Kombat and Street Fighter, still considered by many as the best titles of all time. Since then, the genre had it’s ups and downs, eventually evolving from 2D to 3D graphics. Other fighting games worth mentioning are Tekken, Guilty Gear, Soul Calibur and Virtua Fighter. The franchise successfully combines action-adventure genre with a stealth genre. The series’ first installment, Metal Gear, was released in 1987. In Metal Gear players take control over a special forces operative, named Solid Snake, who needs to find the titular “Metal Gear”, a bipedal walking tank. Since 1987 several sequels for multiple consoles have been released. These sequels expand the original game's plot by adding new characters (both opposing and supporting Snake), while there have also been a few prequels exploring the origins of many characters. The franchise has also been adapted into other media (e.g. comics and novels). The most notable traits of Metal Gear franchise are its intricate storylines, fourth wall humor, and exploration of many philosophical and political themes, with multiple references to Hollywood movies as an extra flavor. Metal Gear was immensely successful, winning many awards and selling over 42 million copies worldwide. This game is a true classic. Is Metal Gear the mother of all stealth games?
